Janusz Kaminski, A.S.C. is one of today's most highly regarded cinematographers. His acclaimed work has brought him three Academy Award nominations, two of which won him the Oscar® for Best Cinematography. Mr. Kaminski has also had a long and distinguished association with director Steven Spielberg.
Janusz Kaminski won his first Academy Award, as well as a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award, for his black-and-white cinematography for Schindler's List, Mr. Spielberg's Holocaust drama released in 1993. Mr. Kaminski also received honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association, among others.
His second Academy Award was the result of his cinematography for Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998), starring Tom Hanks. Mr. Kaminski also earned an Oscar® nomination for Mr. Spielberg's drama Amistad (1997), which starred Morgan Freeman.
In addition, Janusz Kaminski collaborated with Mr. Spielberg on the blockbuster The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), starring Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Moore, and A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), starring Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law.
Their most recent projects have been Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise, which was released this summer and the upcoming crime drama Catch Me If You Can, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks and is scheduled for release on December 25.
Mr. Kaminski's other film credits as cinematographer include Cameron Crowe's Jerry Maguire (1996), starring Tom Cruise, How to Make an American Quilt ((1995), starring Winona Ryder, Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill (1995), starring Patrick Swayze, The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), and Trouble Bound (1992).
After a decade as an acclaimed director of photography, Mr. Kaminski made his directorial debut in 2000 with the thriller Lost Souls, starring Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin.
A native of Poland, Mr. Kaminski came to the United States in 1981. He studied cinematography at Columbia College in Chicago, receiving his B.A. in 1987. Relocating to Los Angeles, he became a cinematography fellow at the American Film Institute, and began his professional career on the feature Fallen Angels.
Mr. Kaminski has also served as the cinematographer on the television projects Class of '61 (1993), which was an Amblin production, and the acclaimed cable movie Wildflower (1991) directed by Diane Keaton.
