2002 Hollywood Film Festival & European Union
Celebrate European Cinema In Hollywood

6th Annual Hollywood Film Festival Unveils 2002 Dates -
October 2 to 8

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hollywood Film Festival will mark its triumphant return on October 2, 2002, to the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Paramount and Raleigh Studios for a sixth annual, weeklong series of screenings, seminars, competitions, awards, and other unique festivities.

The Hollywood Film Festival is proud to announce its alliance with the European Union Commission and its focus on celebrating European Cinema during the festival. "We are honored to have the support of the European Union and its 15 members, so that we can recognize the great cultural contribution of Europe to the past, present and future of cinema," festival founder Carlos de Abreu said.

The Hollywood Film Festival and European Union initiative is comprised of the EUROPEAN FILM SHOWCASE and the HOLLYWOOD EUROPEAN FILM AWARD which will be bestowed during the prestigious Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony.

"It is a pleasure and an honor for the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C. -- together with the Consuls of the European Union member countries in Los Angeles and the Cultural Counselors of the fifteen embassies of the EU member countries in Washington -- to be sponsors of the Hollywood Film Festival. It is indeed one of our permanent endeavours to provide an American audience with quality feature and documentary films from the European Union, America's biggest and most valuable partner in the world. It certainly remains an uphill battle to achieve this goal. Our cultural 2002 Hollywood Film Festival and linguistic diversities are a richness we are proud of: in filmmaking they often translate into interesting and colorful entertainment that deserves to be shared with our friends in the United States and especially with those on the West Coast. Recently, European feature films have scored high in box offices around the United States. As to documentaries, they have always been and still are one of the most valuable expressions of the 'European way' of showing that we do care for the less-favored citizens of the world. The Hollywood Film Festival, therefore, is an extraordinary platform we are proud to be part of," said Willy Helin, Director, Press and Public Affairs Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C.

"More than ever we are committed to assisting talented filmmakers from the global creative community to access established Hollywood," de Abreu said.

Additionally, the film festival incorporates in its activities the Hollywood Film Conference, Hollywood Film Screenings, and Hollywood Movie Awards.

Last year's Opening Night Premiere was Paramount Classics' "An American Rhapsody" by Eva Gardos and the Closing Night Premiere was DreamWorks' World Premiere of Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion." The festival also presented a special screening featuring the "The Diplomat," a documentary by Tom Zubrycki, regarding Dr. Jose Ramos Horta's struggle to secure the independence of his country, East Timor.

The festival's Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony was held before an audience of over 1,200 guests at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Special honors went to Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor -- "Hollywood Actress and Actor of the Year Awards" -- and the "Hollywood Breakthrough Awards" to Shannon Elizabeth and Paul Walker. Other Hollywood luminaries who were honored included producer Edward S. Feldman, director John Frankenheimer, cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, editor Tom Rolf, composer Hans Zimmer, songwriter Diane Warren, art director Robert Boyle and casting director David Rubin.

The Gala was truly an extraordinary Hollywood moment. Celebrities and Hollywood notables who attended the ceremony included U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra, Steve Beck, Thora Birch, Jacqueline Bisset, James L. Brooks, Sandra Bullock, Erika Christensen, Robert Cohen, Bruce Davison, Cameron Diaz, Shannon Elizabeth, Fionnula Flanagan, Harrison Ford, Robert Forster, Stacey Keach, Sally Kellerman, Nicole Kidman, Nastassja Kinski, Baz Luhrmann, Penny Marshall, Ewan McGregor, Scott Patterson, Sydney Pollack, Eva Marie Saint, Tony Scott, Charlize Theron, Paul Walker and Robert Wise to name a few.
