"An American Rhapsody" and "Girl From Rio"
Win Best Feature Film Awards
Hollywood, CA. -- August 7, 2001 -- The 5th Annual Hollywood Film Festival's
"Hollywood Awards" ceremony, honoring independent filmmakers and
established Hollywood professionals, was held last night before a
standing-room-only audience of over 1,200 Hollywood Film Festival attendees
at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Special honors went to
director John Frankenheimer, producer Edward S. Feldman, cinematographer
Laszlo Kovacs, editor Tom Rolf, composer Hans Zimmer, songwriter Diane
Warren, production designer Robert F. Boyle, and casting director David
Rubin, as well as actors Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Paul Walker and
Shannon Elizabeth, and Baz Luhrmann's film "Moulin Rouge."
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta received the festival's
"Hollywood Humanitarian Award," which was presented to him by Congressman
Xavier Becerra during last night's ceremony.
The Hollywood Film Festival honored the feature films "An American
Rhapsody" and "Girl From Rio" with the awards "Best Feature" and "Best
International Feature," respectively. "An American Rhapsody," starring
Natassja Kinski and Tony Goldwyn, was written and directed by Eva Gardos,
and is a moving story of love and determination based on her own experience
of coming to America. The romantic comedy "Girl From Rio," a U.K./Spain
co-production by director Christopher Monger, tells the story of a
Samba-obsessed London clerk who robs a bank and boards the first flight to
Rio.
The Hollywood Film Festival was founded in 1997 by Carlos de Abreu and
Janice Pennington, "New York Times" best-selling authors and producers.
Regarding the conclusion of the 5th annual festival, Mr. de Abreu said, "We
are delighted by the response we have received from Hollywood and the
independent filmmaking community during the course of this past week. Our
conferences were packed and our screenings were well-attended. We had over
20,000 attendees and last night's gala awards ceremony was truly an
extraordinary 'Hollywood' moment."
In addition to the feature film awards, "Cunnamulla," by Dennis O'Rourke,
was selected as the Hollywood Film Festival's Best Documentary. Sometimes
sad, often hilarious, "Cunnamulla" is an astonishingly honest portrait of
life in a small, isolated outback Australian community. The festival also
named "Lurch," by Boris Hars-Tschachotin, as Best Short Film, and "F8," by
director Jason Wen, as Best Animated Film.
Celebrities and Hollywood notables who attended the 5 day-long fest
included Congressman Xavier Becerra, Steve Beck, Thora Birch, Jacqueline
Bisset, James L. Brooks, Sandra Bullock, Rob Cohen, Cameron Diaz, Harrison
Ford, Stacy Keach, Sally Kellerman, Penny Marshall, David Permut, Sydney
Pollack, Mark Rydell, Eva Marie Saint, Tony Scott, Charlize Theron, and
Robert Wise to name a few. The gala awards presentation Monday evening was
hosted by Julie Moran of "Entertainment Tonight," and attendees were
treated to the music of renowned band leader Johnny Crawford and his
twelve-piece orchestra.
